The Russia of the Soviet Union is still above the Russian Federation of today in everything except technological development and access to consumer gadgets, widgets and trifles.
Industrial base size, industrial development, population growth, steel production, electricity generation and consumption. Probably even life expectancy. Certainly median age of the population and fertility rate.
I would bet $50 Russia of the Soviet Union was above today's Russia in those real metrics.

As is inability to accept or deal with hardship, even with the understanding of it being the necessary price for a significantly improved future.
