As other anons have said, these are people that want to kill for a living, and they want to do it legally. The more stable and moral people are (mostly) drawn to other fields and roles. The more unstable people are in jail. What you see is the result of that, and what the culture breeds. And, of course, you have to take into account that you're hearing from the guys that are going on podcasts and writing books.

Even the average grunt won't start doing warcrimes as soon as they deploy, and they usually know better than to talk about it later. "Operator" type guys are giddy at the thought of it. They'll take every opportunity to tell you how they slaughtered a bunch of civilians, but they'll sprinkle in some bullshit to make themselves look cool. Obviously they are oblivious to how psychopathic it sounds.

Worse than that, they are never punished for any of the horrible things they do. Even average Joe grunts only get a slap on the wrist (at most), but these guys are never held accountable for anything they do.
