It's what TVtropes calls the "Seinfeld Isn't funny" effect. Scott Pilgrim literally invented that style - which was, in and of itself, successfully capturing the zeitgeist of the time in which it was made, not an intentional attempt to "ape" the early 2000's. It took cues from manga and retro video games (It literally came out as the people who were kids playing NES and SNES games were in their early twenties) but put its own spin on it. The reason it now seems overplayed is because, as all sudden, unexpected successes do, it attracted a legion of imitators and twenty years on (Like with Seinfeld) people are probably now more familiar with things that took influence from Scott Pilgrim than with Scott Pilgrim itself.
