It may not be as extreme, but it's far from a schizo take. Looking at the new maps, there is a lot more empty space compared to before. It get's even worse when you look at the separate volcano maps. They keep the total amount of chests/primogems more or less the same through just dropping 3 chests at once so that the crowd doesn't get too upset, but the general exploration gameplay suffers immensely.
