What happened last year?
>Two-stop races ruled the roost at the Red Bull Ring last year. George Russell won with a medium>medium>hard strategy, though he hadn’t been in contention until Max Verstappen and Lando Norris’ tussle for the lead in the closing laps ended in a flurry of carbon fibre and mild recrimination.
>They had both been running a medium>hard>medium race, which was the preferred route among the points-scoring cars. Six of the eventual top 10 took that option, with three others going another way with a medium>hard>hard race.
>19 cars had started on a medium tyre, with Guanyu Zhou the only naysayer on a hard – but from there was a distinct split in the field. The drivers intending two hard stints all stopped between Laps 10-12, while those planning two medium stints stayed out until at least Lap 19.
>What was interesting about Verstappen’s race – other than how it concluded – is that he went into it with two new sets of hard tyres but eventually preferred a used medium for his final stint.
>The C5 soft tyre wasn’t really raceable, with only Max (limping after a Norris-related puncture) and Fernando Alonso (taking a successful tilt at fastest lap) taking it at the end of the race.
