Too bad for Lenin, Stalin's support came from the rest of the party, Lenin was no monarch who could decide his successor at whim. Also Lenin was dying of dementia by that point, and had no control over the party except nominally.
Anyway there was nothing Stalin did that Lenin and Trotsky would have refrained from, they were all megalomaniacal and genocidal, the only question was "when" no "if".
