Ignoring all the wormschizo, genre war stuff that you can see here everyday. I can think of a few things.
One Genshin's total number of players when it launched was abnormal, because of idiosyncratic reasons not related to the quality of the game itself. It could have never retain than many players.
Two, the head writer of Genshin is embarrassingly bad at storytelling. They killed the momentum of the game by having the overarching story in the freezer. The constant festivals without anything serious in between is retarded.
Three, they divested from the game into other projects. Cutscenes are sloppy and low effort. The game hasn't done anything fresh since introducing Dendro etc.
