I just choose where I want the shadows to be when sketching, then do a "cleaner" copy when shading individual parts. Anything that isn't skin is just throwing shit at the wall with a watercolor brush until it looks good enough for me
Also as >>533961169 said, having examples to eyeball at helps when placing shadows in the first place
