Sol is the "Bardock was a brilliant scientist" thing but for real. Some jerkoff Asuka screwed up a scientist experiment that "killed" Sol's wife and created Gears (monsters). This also turned Sol himself into a gear and one of the strongest things alive. So he goes around hunting gears and searching for Asuka to get revenge. He's a genius, but can't be bothered to fight properly since he has enough to power to bulldoze through everything. He'll say he doesn't care what happens otherwise, but Sol pretty much always tries to help people.
