If you aren't willing to deal with jank or some poor design choices because of budget you're likely not going to like Digimon games. In general World games are monster raising games while Story games are monster collecting JRPGs.

>Digimon World 1 (PS1)
Monster raising game. Fantastic introduction to Digimon, doesn't require a lot of grinding, and has a great sense of exploration. Going into it blind can be a bit frustrating since it's somewhat easy to get a Numemon/Sukamon but even with that it's fun and the world is well done.
>Digimon World 2 (PS1)
Monster collecting JRPG. Has many issues that can be mitigated by emulators. It's rough around the edges but it's decent enough.
>Digimon World 3 (PS1)
Pretty much the same situation as 2.
>Digimon Rumble Arena (PS1)
Platform fighter. It's a bit unbalanced but it's fun if you like platform fighters.
>Digimon Digital Card Battle (PS1)
Second card game, first one was Japan only on the PS1. If you want to play a decent TCG from the time period (The current TCG isn't this) it's solid.
>Digimon Digital Monsters (Wonderswan) and Digital Monster Ver. S - Digimon Tamers (Saturn)
Tamagotchi v-pet game. If you want that specifically these both scratch that itch, but the Saturn game is Japanese only.
>Digimon Adventure 02 - Tag Tamers (WS), Digimon Adventure 02 - D1 Tamers (Wonderswan Color), and Digimon - Anode Tamer & Cathode Tamer - Veedramon Version (WSC)
They're these tactical RPG things. I don't know how better to explain it. They're used to cover Ryo's story from the 02 and Tamers anime.
>Digimon Battle Spirit (GBA and WSC), Battle Spirit 1.5 (WSC), and Battle Spirit 2 (GBA and WSC)
Platform fighting games. They're all solid. I believe 1.5 is mostly pointless but I'm not super versed in the WSC versions.
>Digimon World 4 (PS2 and GC)
Dungeon crawling Action RPG. It's got a lot of issues across the board and is more of a novelty.

Running out of room.
