all you have to do is make them think that the majority of people are doing/thinking/wanting something, and most people will fall in line. Most people are followers, that's just how it is. And a lot more are just lazy and don't really give a shit and figure that if it's good enough for everyone else, then it's probably fine. It's an easier and simpler way of life, kinda, aside from having to keep up with trends all the time.
I think a lot of social media is just shills or bots for that very reason. Creating artificial trends out of thin air, making people think that a lot of other people are already thinking/doing something, and then enough real people start going along with this imaginary herd and suddenly it's a real trend and you can't tell whether it was ever fake or not. That's marketing.
