It was still in use at least by the end of the Dreamcast,by the way, since a version of it got republished in Japanese Sonic Adventure 2 limited edition copies...
But yeah, the 90's pre-Adventure Sonic lore was a mess where Sega just let anyone do whatever and it'd be a shame if someone decided to do that again.
