I like that FGO is so heavy with its use of 2D assets because it's a game so inherently influenced by designs that likely couldn't be done the same way in 3D.

Melusines armor detailing is clearly something Choco cares deeply about. Dantes' whole personality is sold so well by that art. Harada being told "make a cute demon loli, you're good at that" and making Beni-Enma, Rikyu/Koma looking like something out of a Japanese horror movie thanks to the use of black in their art etc. are all things that are intrinsically important to those characters appeals and you just can't do that in 3D without concessions. FGO Arcade tried and it was cool to see, but its models looked janky and weird because of it (I still think it was the right choice though). The closest thing to finding a middle ground here has been ZZZ and even with Hoyos mega budgets and the active intention to try and shake up artstyle, it still rarely ventures from the norm visually.

The unfortunate truth is an FGO 2 in 3D would likely want to look consistently good and to do that on a tight production time scale necessary of a gacha game, the concession you have to make is genericisation of design elements in the same way Hoyoverse games do. But that is so against what makes FGO special, it'd be a gutting of the soul of the game itself.

If we really do EOS for some sort of FGO 2, I hope it still uses 2D assets and retains the artist first mentality FGO has.
