By richest you mean beinng slightly better agrarian backwater than other agrarian backwaters of the pre-industrial era.India did not become poorer on per capita basis.It's economy did not shring either.Europe outgrew India due to industrial revolution.That is why the share of their global economy fell, not because it literally shrank.
