You need 3 different resources just to level up your characters to begin with that are all mostly accumulated through real time or clearing stuff. Eventually you can't clear anything because being underleveled gives you stat decreases so you either need EXTREMELY overpowered units to compensate, spend money to gain resources to move forward or just wait days-weeks-months to get resources for free.
You have to rely on meta units but also some levels are element weak/strong against them so then you need other units with different strengths but oopsy you're out of resources just trying to make your starting 5 current so time to wait again.
I tried to catch up at first until I learned all this and now I just do dailies/weeklies and then try to progress every now and again.
