The US has different views on immigration, while they believe that skilled immigration improves a society they are not like Europeans where it is a moral imperative to take in browns.
Even in Europe Switzerland is known for having secure borders so I guess NZ could get away with only allowing for European immigration.

It's an island nation that's relatively remote and it has large natural resource, even has a strong mining sector.
