The best definition I found is any act that influences a person to take an action that may or may not be in their best interests. It's kind of one of those things that most of the time you hear about it, it's about scammers on the internet, but it takes different forms.
For example, in my story the main character Jacob was single and looking. Sitting in the lunch room, he sees this girl laughing at something and his friend says he should go ask her what she's laughing at. He does and she shows him this funny picture her friend just sent her. It looked like a chance meeting and everyone was acting on their own, but the friend knew who that girl was and knew she couldn't resist sharing a laugh so she sent her a funny picture at the right moment to cause the situation.
