This kitchen at least has a good amount of prep space, though there were some dumb decisions made - the stove is dead center of a shallow island so the prep space there is split and when you're at it the fridge is right behind you, and so on.

You can definitely have both. As mentioned my dad is a serious cook, but he also happens to be a licensed architect, and he designed the kitchen in the house I grew up in. (Pic from when it was sold last year.) It ended up being very functional while also looking good.
