They really give away the game with their reaction to alternative "ships" or when characters turn out to be straight, the homophobic complaints make it obvious that they do not see these relationships as relationships but actually as endorsements of homosexuality as a concept.

You wouldn't walk up to a straight couple on the street and call them homophobic, because that's absurd. Being straight is not a rejection of homosexuality, straight people are literally not capable of feeling attracted to people of the same sex as them, they're not making a choice anymore than gay people are - but when it comes to fictional relationships it's somehow different. It all comes back to the american need to be morally superior/virtuous. Diversity is virtuous, heterosexuality is not diverse so it is not virtuous, ipso facto you cannot have straight relationships depicted in media. This is the natural consequence of uncritically accepting things like it's religious dogma.
