The Russians mostly fled, but their soldiers hated retreating, and their morale was close to breaking after being forced to fall back repeatedly. Their so-called "strategy" only worked because Napoleon made the fatal mistake of pushing too deep into hostile territory. About 20% of his army was wiped out by typhus within weeks—something practically unavoidable given the medical knowledge of the time.
On top of that, his army had grown too large to manage effectively—an error he hadn’t expected to make such a difference. The strain on his supply lines was overwhelming. But once he returned to commanding a smaller, more agile force, he quickly regained his dominance—you simply couldn’t beat him, even with twice the numbers.
