An example would be photography. Up until the advent of photography, realism was quite popular in art. You had absolutely GORGEOUS paintings and drawings, because that was the best way to capture something's likeness.

Photography destroyed this. Why? Because artists realized they couldn't compete with the camera, so they started drawing awful, ugly, demonic looking filthy instead and calling it "abstract"
