In the specific cases I know they were involved in things at Bletchely Park, code breaking and signals interception, general intelligence work, lots of reports, various social engineering programs both in the UK and abroad.
Honestly nothing out of the ordinary and pretty normal for any country during war time, but there were a lot of concerns about how to keep things quiet after the war. So in addition to just telling them to keep quiet they figured if they were transplanted somewhere that they didn't know anyone, they'd be less likely to confide because they might confide in the wrong person etc and for the most part it worked, brits maintain that stiff upper lip and proper sense of civil duty very well. I work at our RSL's (basically pubs for veterans) and through that i've met a lot of interesting people, but even in their old age a lot are still terrified that the brits would have them killed talking about the things they worked on. I don't think that'd be the case now, and perhaps not even then, but the fear was very real as were the marching orders to fuck off to Aus.
