A shotgun works by propelling a wad containing shot through the barrel, creating a pattern of pellets. You can affect the pattern by changing a choke from tight to fully open, this will either extend the range or make you more likely to hit. Alternatively, you can use them with slugs, which is essentially a larger block of metal if you want penetrative power and range instead of a shot pattern.
The most important thing to know about shotguns is that you should never use longer shells than the shotgun is chambered for. If your shotgun is chambered for 12 gauge, there's still the chamber length to consider - it's either a 2½", 3" or a 3½" chamber. If your shotgun is chambered for 2½" only, do NOT chamber a 3" shell. There's some space in the chamber for the hull to open properly, so a 3" shell may fit in a 2½" chamber, but that could cause a blockage an explode in your face. The same applies to 3" chamber and a 3½" shell. However you can shoot any SHORTER shotgun shells out of your shotgun safely, just ensure that the calibre matches.
If you are unsure, check the barrel of your shotgun. It should have markings indicating what the chamber size is, pic related is how it appears on my Supernova.
