I think Sugar had a good idea of the beginning and ending of the story. That's why the show had a great worldbulding and could manage to deliver a feeling that we're discovering something bigger. But you could only "discover" something for so long until it becomes the usual.
SU is the prime example of a series that's more about the journey rather than the destination. I didn't even bother watching Future.
