Zombies don't net you dark souls, only life orbs when killed with the shadowgun. You will find govi like what Netti was telling you with your shadowgun. Then you will see near your life meter one of your tabs on your radial dial turned purple. That allows you to open Soul gates up to that point, and charge up your shadowgun.
