Garriot's story is interesting.
You want to make a game that was 'about something' to prove that PTA moms were wrong about video games, and then you realize that you were basically illiterate and completely uncultured and couldn't write a story about anything. So then you go and teach yourself as much about world religion and philosophy as you can as fast as you can so that you can actually make a game that has a thesis and point while not bankrupting your company by missing your release date.
