I think interest for native American culture didn't filter that much on this side of the Atlantic back in the 1990s? At least I can't remember it. Maybe they were more popular in the 1960s and 1970s, Tex Willer was a popular comic with a positive appreciation of natives back then.
On a semi-related note, this is the extinct Indian Hare dog according to 4o, supposedly it looked like a coyote and rubbed like a cat.
