I actually think it's because Cody is a huge millenial and he loves pandering to gamers because of him being a gamer himself.
He might felt like he was also deserving of an acting gig for a video game adaptation because of sucking off MGS and Zelda all his life.
I don't know what made Roman take this role as his first real hollywood main role but pic related might indicate his hiding his powerlevel.
