Look, I know that Kris's design is most clearly based on Varik from Brandish but Toby has mentioned Wild Arms. And Wild Arms 2 has the main character posessed by a demon called Lord Blazer which turns him into a stupidly powerful red knight. And the final battle is fusing with the spirit of the Sword Magess (compare to Asriel's "sword magician") to become an androgynous hero and defeat the Lord Blazer within. This fight happens in a primordial sea of living "mud" within the earth (sound familiar with dark fountains and DEPTHS.png)?
