Pretty much this, even if the gameplay is more polished and feels better. The story felt completly different than the tone of the other game, even if there are very kino moments in dod2. Players just made up their headcanon that its not part of the overall lore due to the game being a vanilla flavored jrpg instead of a suicide incuding game.
The creators havent really forgotten about dod2 but its a self contained story. (well taro has forgotten about everything that isnt 2butt by now)
Fun fact Dod2 sold more copies than dod3 in japan
