That said, another issue I think is that there's not really that many characters to fixate over compared to South Park or MLP.
The big ticket right now is Rodrick, with Greg close behind, and way further back are Rowley and Fregley. If you want the really obscure stuff, there's Chirag.
South Park on the other hand has the main 4 and Creek as big ticket items, which is already 6 charas, with Jimmy, Pip and Damien, Token, and a bunch of others tagging along.
It's not like you can't have a large and horny fandom off of just a handful of flagship charas, look at Monkie Kid or even Omori, but you need way more official cute content, and there just isn't much for Diary, and unlike Monkie Kid or Omori, nowhere near as much willingness to ship the characters.
Diary's main ships are gonna be Greg-centric, but he doesn't really have anyone viable. The only people he ever gets shipped with are Rowley and his Rodrick. For a large mainstream fandom, Rodrick being a ship you can have openly is out of the question, and Rowley miiiight become a prominent partner, but he might be hobbled by being fat. Cartman was able to slip by into popularity a bit, but I don't see the fujos hyperfixate on him all that much
