Open world was probably too ambitious for Pokemon. I remember when Masuda was asked about BotW when the Switch was new (I think it was Game Informer?), and he didn't seem sure if that would be the right approach for the series. Lol and behold.
I kind of liked the Kitakami DLC map since it seemed to have a tighter direction. The Japanese Summertime feeling, and the little town where Kieran and Carmine come from, it was nice.
I think that's why they've chosen to focus on Lumiose City in ZA. Give themselves a more limited scope to work on instead of stretching themselves too thin. The aesthetic and performance has already improved considerably. Maybe Game Freak is just better at smaller scale projects...
