That entire arc was so good because it was explicitly and overtly clear just how out of his league Peter was. The guy was legitimately fighting for his life, no holding back whatsoever, and it still wasn’t enough. Super satisfying to see him overcome it in the end but the guy was really solidly written as a menace.
