The manufacturer gear pieces also drop off of the interception bosses but randomly, whereas the box lets you pick. So ideally you will farm them a while, see what you get, then use the box to fill in what you're missing. Even you get all the gear you need though buy it for the reason I mentioned because you will always need to gear new characters and will eventually run out of gear pieces again.
