>dragging gay politics into everything
I promised myself to stop complaining about this when Sapphireposting for everyone else's sake but it's just so hard. Her whole character concept accidentally became fag/troon bait, the only one who has it worse is her boyfriend. I also saw the dominoes fall into place in real time. For example the #Ruby/Sapphire Tumblr tags used to mainly have a lot of Franticshipping art by actual good artists like Luoqin, this was before drawing gay flags and mastectomy scars on characters became trendy. Then around 2013 (note how many totally natural "cultural changes" happen in the early 2010s) a cartoon called Steven Universe came out, which also had 2 characters named Ruby and Sapphire who were also in a canonical relationship, except they're lesbians. The #Ruby/Sapphire tag was never the same afterwards, since even when the manga was possibly at its most popular (gens 3-5, BW2 arc hiatus mindrot hasn't settled in for that long, pre ORASpocalypse hype) it was still more niche than a Cartoon Network show, so I had to abandon that search tag entirely.

I got the sense the revival was reactionary too. I like using video essays as background noise, but the good ones not created by troons (in my experience at least) are often made by people who claim to be Christian, but even if they are genuinely religious they're usually the moderate kind who almost never bring up their beliefs unless it's relevant.
