it's a brilliant tactic to clear the warehouse of the old version. if you don't buy it while you can, you'll be stuck later having to buy the lame small Death Star for full $1000! the old Death Star sets will sell out immediately!
it's like a "New Coke" type of maneuver. they don't even need to actually produce a lot of them. just enough to be seen in stores. nobody is really going to buy $1000 set after all, so all they need to do is be seen. they might even be empty boxes filled with rocks.
