Chao were introduced to the Sonic Series with Sonic Adventures on the Dreamcast. Basically you raise them in a Chao Garden until they evolve in a cocoon. Like a V-Pet SIM.

Chao also appear in the Dark Brotherhood rpg as equipable modifiers. They don't evolve in that game.
