You won't know thousands of words then, you're most likely to see the most common words, as they are the most common you see them the most common, and this follows the zipf law.

The most frequent word is literally twice as common as the second-most-frequent word, or even more. When everyone says "the first thousand" this is literally what they're talking about, as the first 1,000 learned in any natural way (like you said) would be the 1,000 most common due to zipf's law.
By the time you've gotten to the first thousand most common you're likely to know AT BEST several hundred other words, as the less common words are really significantly less common than the less common words that came right before them.

Basically your theory falls apart from the start due to the basics of how linguistics works.
