I don't know why they did it, but in SNL's defense the show was broadcast live before any home recording devices were available/affordable to most people so they probably never considered people looking at still photos from recordings. Here's another shot you can see the difference in tone on Carrie better than Gilda. I have another color shot that pretty low quality but will post it to bump the thread if needed.
