If you want it to do melee AND ranged then you have to go for a modded mechanoid. Royal Lancer from [AV] Mechtech is cool, it has a melee and ranged mode you can switch between.
At that point you may as well grab Mechanoid Upgrades too and then stuff it full of them to make your ultimate fighting robot.
