They adjust cam lift and timing on the fly, allowing an engine to run more efficiently than normal when driving handy, then letting it make more power than normal when the naughty foot comes into play.
They do this using the oil from the engine's lubrication system, fed under pressure and controlled by solenoids.
They're the best of all worlds, but CAN be prone to blocking up and shit if oil changes are neglected, or followed to the letter.
Remember, the manufacturer doesn't care if a car is "likely" to make it out of warranty period with no issues if you service it every 20 k miles because their job is to sell you a new one thereafter.
They couldn't give less of a fuck what happens beyond that period, so change oils more regularly if yer holding onto the thing
