Question to filipinos.

My great-granduncle fought and died on Mindanao (along the Pulangi River and in Talomo) in WWII.
I want to learn about all that, but how far do you think it's necessary to read back to? Like, should I read about the Moro Rebellion? Because the only time the Pulangi River Valley was significant during that was the hunt against Datu Ali, and Davao never seemed to be relevant during that entire time. Not only that, but I can't find shit when it comes to English sources for the form of slavery practiced by Datu Ali's Sultanate of Buayan; only for the Sultanate of Sulu, which isn't even on Mindanao.

As such, should I just start at the Japanese invasion in December 1941? Or even as late as at the start of Japanese occupation in 1942?

Also, I know the Moro War lasted a while, but are the rural regions of the Pulangi River Valley and Kibabwe/Talomo/Davao safe to travel through now? Do the folks there speak English or would I have a hard time not speaking flip?
