Something I thought was cool about the neutral route in SMT1 I forgot to mention.

After you killed Vishnu, etc and return to the cathedral you have to talk to chaos and law hero one more time before they turn on you. When they leave and you stand in the middle of where their argument was this dialog pops up. "You can't hear anything from the right side any more. You can't hear anything from the left side anymore. It's quiet." and it's followed by a mysterious voice that simply says "Keep moving forward". And of course you walk down the middle path to keep going further inside at that point. It's very cool. You have to walk this way to enter the cathedral anyway though so walking the middle path isn't as thematic anymore but it's still cool.
