What are modern alternatives to pixel art for 2D games? I feel like pixel art is overused and almost always a cringe nostalgia-masturbation without actually having any idea how games felt and looked like back then. The only thing worse than pixel art is "ps1 graphics".

Does anyone have any inspirational examples of good art-direction without it being pixel art?
