The quartz they found were "free" yes, but it still needed to he broken apart from the rock by a person who knows what theyre doing using a fuckoff huge hammer. Plus gemstones you buy that are specifically on jewelery are often cut (if that's the right word, I only know if from runescape) to look like a proper decoration instead of raw, which can be jaged and have weird shapes that may not suit the seller or designer's taste
