A. Lower grits depends on how much cutting you need, if the part is already in decent shape, you can start at a higher grit like 400 and work your way up : 600-800-1000-1200-1500-2000-4000-6000-8000-10000 and finish polish with a glass file if its a flat part. If curved, a good polish on 10,000 should do.

B.If you know you're just gonna matte coat it. 400 all the way through 2000 (the more common grits) should get you a good finish.

>truthfully if i can get the base plastic to look like 10-20% close to the normal plastic i would see it as a victory but if i could get it exact or within 5% id like to try if nothing else for the learning experience until i have a place to paint model kits again.
>i typically make things that are simple like UC grunt suits so i wouldnt be sanding something geometrically complex.

10%-20% will be those B. steps. 400-2000. 5% will be probably what you'll get close too with 400-10,000 with pracitce and patience. Enjoy your gunpla anon and have fun. Gunpla wa jiyū da
