Thousands of people have complained about their neighbours because of log--burners and bonfires, according to the latest figures. A new nationwide study has revealed the areas in the UK where residents are most likely to report their neighbours for domestic smoke issues, including bonfires, wood burners and chimney smoke, based on five years of data from 2020 to 2025.

>The analysis by Imaginfires includes Freedom of Information (FOI) responses from councils across the UK to pinpoint the regions with the highest levels of smoke-related complaints, both in total numbers and per capita.

Barnsley tops the national rankings with over 70 complaints per 10,000 residents - the highest rate recorded. Wakefield and Doncaster also feature prominently, suggesting heightened regional concern in parts of Yorkshire.

>Birmingham registered the highest total number of complaints (5,311) but ranks fifth when adjusted for population size. In London, Bexley and Hounslow stand out as the most active reporting boroughs.
