for me they were the closest thing to real anime girls. i watched mostly hololive because they're contained by strict rules and can't talk about politics or any retarded ass activist shit or whatever. i found them funny too. it was also parasocial and i did kind of fall in love with one of them. but i got into vtubers just before covid, and the intense energy in the vtuber fan communities was addicting, especially on /jp/ where we were basically stuck in one general that was usually the fastest thread on the site.

if you like cute girl anime and idolshit, they are an extension of that. if you are after parasocial relationships, they are probably the best at that. if you like dumb drama, they are good at that.

i was obsessed with them from very late 2019 all the way through early 2024. the community and events were new and interesting. the concerts were fun to watch with other anons, and there were and are groups that pirate them and restream them live. the flame flickered out for me a while ago, because there isn't much experimentation and frankly the scene is somewhat stagnant now that it's firmly established. i also just kind of got bored. but those first few years were the most fun i can remember having on 4chan for a very long time
