It's simply Current Game Syndrome, a social phenomenon observed primarily in the FGC. Doesn't matter how shitty the current game is compared to its predecessors, it is the current game, so in order to be polite and not commit some sort of FGC faux pas, you MUST play it. It is the one everyone's playing. You can't be part of the community if you don't play Current Game. If you run a set it must be in Current Game, you cannot request to play an older game or everyone will think you're weird.
