Optics does not matter at all. Listen to Ted Cruz interview on Tucker's podcast. It's a biblical cosmic thing to them. There is literally no cost they are not willing to pay (on behalf of their constituents) in order to further their suicidal religious beliefs.
Some portion are those religious christcuck people, and some portion are just child rapists. There is probably also some overlap. But that's why things are the way they are.

The fact that they call those desert people religious fundamentalists while accidentally an entire empire because of their wrong interpretations of christcuckery is really something.
